the only man that could fit
twelve shitty beers into his golf bag
Tecate
never could count all of his strokes
drunker and drunker by the hole
stopping the cart-lady for fresh ice as he went
burping;
laughing;
a red-faced cheater
I bristle at the thought of cheaters
don’t you
or are you one too
Zack had a new job every nine months and they
were all gonna pan out for him
every one
none have yet;
a thirty-nine year period.
man, he gets offended easily
I had gone to see him at
an outdoor booth at some downtown festival
his job, that time, was to enroll unsuspecting prospects into
his ripoff offering
I liked Zack
the parking spots were jammed for ten blocks in
any direction
N S E or W
hallelujah I found a spot three blocks East and two North
from his less-than-optimal little booth
my legs had given out
they do that occasionally
I forced myself to make it there and
pay Zack a courtesy visit and
get back to my car before I lost mah legs
entirely
swimming injury
ten years of back and forth
two national records
anyway
Zack found out from a big mouth co-friend of
ours that
I had called it a courtesy visit
which for unknown reasons Zack
didn’t understand. eg, the nomenclature.
nor did, the cruiser, Dr. Bill, the co-friend
Zack calls me
yells through the phone for twenty minutes
I held the phone out and away from my ear
I am piqued at the site of yellers too
usually they’re gay men or uncontrolled women
Zack was a short little guy
not a woman
as far as I know
people do crossdress tho
oh, that Zackie
paid him a courtesy visit
and saying, “Thanks,” didn’t occur to him.
the first definition of a courtesy visit in
the dictionary is:
Zack’s not the Godfather but
out of respect
and since I was three blocks away
we got to shake hands and chat a minute
I had to get back before
I was unable to
Zack and Dr., Bill are
no count farm boys
how does Jesus fit in
just how
Jesus is courteous
but, as He says,
“If you’re not welcome then shake the dust off your
feet and move on.”
I chose the latter and
have never looked back, at Zack
or Bill

Doris is back. She paid me a courtesy visit. How kind of her.
Elton’s song, Holiday Inn. 1974 or so.
Le pagué una visita de cortesía
one day, Zack will figure it all out
go to AA and apologize
can you imagine
12 beers in a golf bag
it has never occurred to me to try
I probably would have
but then again
golf’s a gentleman’s game
